Fractional CTO

2–4 days/month, retainer basis

Frequently Asked Questions about the Interim CTO

What is an Interim CTO?

An Interim CTO temporarily assumes the role of Chief Technology Officer — either full-time (classic interim) or on a part-time/retainer basis (Fractional CTO). The advantage: immediate availability without months of recruiting. Typical engagement duration is 3–18 months.

When do I need an Interim CTO?

Typical triggers: your CTO is leaving the company (gap bridging), you are growing rapidly and need technical leadership (scale-up phase), you are preparing a funding round and investors want to see CTO-level competence, or you are facing a technical transformation (platform migration, cloud switch, microservices rollout).

What is the difference between an Interim CTO and a Fractional CTO?

An Interim CTO works full-time for a limited period and assumes full operational CTO responsibility. A Fractional CTO works on a permanent part-time basis (e.g. 2 days/week) and is strategically embedded — without full-time presence. Interim is suited for acute leadership gaps or intensive transformation phases; Fractional for ongoing strategic guidance.

How quickly can an engagement start?

Typically within 2–4 weeks after the initial conversation and contract signing. In urgent situations (e.g. abrupt CTO departure, upcoming due diligence) a start within one week is possible. The initial conversation is free and non-binding.

Can an Interim CTO also lead the engineering team?

Yes — I assume genuine leadership responsibility: 1:1s with team leads and developers, sprint reviews, hiring decisions, tech roadmap ownership and escalation point for technical conflicts. No pure consulting reporting — but operational co-responsibility.

What happens when I hire a permanent CTO later?

The handover is a fixed part of the engagement. I actively support the CTO hiring process (requirements profile, interviews, evaluation of technical candidates) and ensure clean documentation and a structured transition. Many clients use the Fractional model deliberately as a bridge to finding the right permanent CTO.

Which industries and company sizes are a good fit?

Focus is on scale-ups (Series A–C) and mid-market companies with 50–500 employees in growth or transformation phases. Industries: SaaS, e-commerce, FinTech, Industry 4.0, healthcare tech. Geographically: DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).
