An Interim CTO temporarily assumes the role of Chief Technology Officer — either full-time (classic interim) or on a part-time/retainer basis (Fractional CTO). The advantage: immediate availability without months of recruiting. Typical engagement duration is 3–18 months.
Typical triggers: your CTO is leaving the company (gap bridging), you are growing rapidly and need technical leadership (scale-up phase), you are preparing a funding round and investors want to see CTO-level competence, or you are facing a technical transformation (platform migration, cloud switch, microservices rollout).
An Interim CTO works full-time for a limited period and assumes full operational CTO responsibility. A Fractional CTO works on a permanent part-time basis (e.g. 2 days/week) and is strategically embedded — without full-time presence. Interim is suited for acute leadership gaps or intensive transformation phases; Fractional for ongoing strategic guidance.
Typically within 2–4 weeks after the initial conversation and contract signing. In urgent situations (e.g. abrupt CTO departure, upcoming due diligence) a start within one week is possible. The initial conversation is free and non-binding.
Yes — I assume genuine leadership responsibility: 1:1s with team leads and developers, sprint reviews, hiring decisions, tech roadmap ownership and escalation point for technical conflicts. No pure consulting reporting — but operational co-responsibility.
The handover is a fixed part of the engagement. I actively support the CTO hiring process (requirements profile, interviews, evaluation of technical candidates) and ensure clean documentation and a structured transition. Many clients use the Fractional model deliberately as a bridge to finding the right permanent CTO.
